ABOUT THE BOOK   

Rev. Marilyn L. Redmond in "A Spark of Truth" shares information not commonly known due to censorship on television, the news, the internet, publishing houses, newspapers, and more. This book contains information not usually heard or seen. It offers knowledge, information, and answers to health, religion, education, government, and other problems that have been hidden.

There is more to be revealed at deeper levels. The author started out to write a book to expose current issues that were not supportive of the lifestyle of a country described as a democracy -- the United States of America. To her surprise and curiosity in researching more of the history of these topics, she found past knowledge to expose that these problems were centuries old and not just current. She found we are in a global war of the dark against the light forces. The book is titled A "Spark" of Truth as to include all the details would take volumes, and much of the information is available on the internet for those searching for the truth. This book covers only some of the problems.

Marilyn's work comes from experience, research, and years of overcoming difficulties, illness, disease, and misery. Going beyond the misinformation or biased news broadcasts, she reports as an investigative journalist sharing her findings, personal understandings, facts, and hidden truths. Welcome to alternative and unconventional answers and information for our lives to have the truth. Gradually, whistleblowers are breaking the old barriers. This brings new perceptions and knowledge for concerns and wellbeing. Returning Education to Excellence

Education is being open-minded allowing individuals to be themselves. As a retired teacher in the state of Washington, I understand what an excellent education is. It is not about money, tests, or rigid teacher training; it is about a balanced philosophy for left and right brain creativity.

Free thinkers do not accept tyranny, laws that deprive freedom, and thought control.

As a public school teacher with more than sixty years experience, I would like to explain about teaching. What is a real education? In the fifties, we taught to the needs of the student, and then it changed to the school district decided what we were to teach, followed by the state mandates, then the federal government had "No Child Left Behind".

Current philosophy has changed the learning of our children, again. Test scores are only a number given to the results of the performance by a student on a given day on a skill learned. To pigeonhole a student with a number and compare them to another person takes away the individuality of the student’s unique abilities and talents. Only if they have the ability to be creative, intuitive, and offer ideas beyond the confined thinking of the times is there real education. 

The United States has departed from our pioneers in education: such as John Dewey, Jean Piaget, and Abraham Maslow. Today, tests shame the student for not passing. This stops many students from graduating, and continuing on in their educational dreams. The focus needs to be on what a student does well to encourage a student to keep inspired. To compare one student with another is not real.

 Friedrich Froebel (b.1782) was an important contributor to education through his theory on education. In America, education began with Horace Man (b.1796). 1 "Man gave equal attention to methods of teaching spelling and arithmetic, the importance of music in school, and the contentment of physical education to promote healthy living habits."

John Dewey (b.1859) adopted Froebel’s principles in his experimental school at the University of Chicago. Their belief in “self-activity” and play were essential factors in child education. Dewey believed that human beings learn through a 'hands-on' approach. From Dewey's educational point of view, this means that students must interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn.

It is the current philosophy of teaching the students to think in a box for the test rather than encouraging them to think outside the box. Teachers need to assist a student in finding their own abilities while discovering learning is limitless. Even Bill Gates and Paul Allen were allowed to use class time to work/play on computers.  There is a movie, "Spare Parts, where the students were inspired and encouraged to think with their imaginations. They were winners as high school students, twice competing against the reigning victors, MIT.  A balanced curriculum creates the potential for grand outcomes and high self-esteem

A good teacher will drop out of the field because they are sensitive people. I was taught "success breeds success" in college classes for teachers' preparation. Recently, a college instructor supervising student teachers told me that her college students have problematic hoops and complicated challenges dictated from above that are almost impossible. Albert Einstein held that "Education is not the learning of facts; it’s rather the training of the mind to think".

You cannot teach a teacher to think with his heart. Education is not teaching to fill a student with book learning. Left-brain thinking is all about learning to pass a written test. Without a balanced curriculum, there is a robot teacher teaching robot students.

With the changes of focus, creativity is discouraged because book learning and test readiness takes priority. Every grade has a test to pass and instruction for this test dominates the curriculum. When I taught school, there were four standardized tests spaced between grade school and high school. The teachers monitored the growth of each student in regards to subjects.

My class had been working in a math book that taught the principles of multiplication and division besides the tables for multiplication. When my class totally completed the section including two digit problems of the test accurately, the average ability expected of a third grade student in math changed, dramatically. The administration did not want to look like their school failed the standardized test for their grade level in math. 

The teacher were told to return to our prior math books that taught by rote learning and memorization. My teaching partner and I could not understand why the book that taught principles and not just memorizing were not allowed when the scores were outstanding. We were also denied acquiring spelling books that really taught spelling, after the teachers spent two years piloting several programs for a book that did the job. Education is not teaching to fill a student with book learning.

In addition, several teachers in my school had learned a program, The Slingerland Method. It included  reading, English, spelling, phonics, penmanship, art, physical education, and composition. It was teacher  Some of my first graders were reading at 5th and 6th grade level.  Instead of approving the method that surpassed the usual results in a year, the administration told us that we had to use textbooks so the Board of Education knew what page of the book we were on.

Did the inspiration from the hearts of the students leave, when prayer was removed from schools? When you remove prayer from school, the result is violence. Love is the basis of prayer. Sadly, with this not supported in the school people will act out from this missing. With a caring environment, there is productive, harmony atmosphere. Therefore accepting Maslow's peak experiences, transcending the individual ego brings a more advanced consciousness of

peace and creativity. Our inner lives will promote insight and stimulation into higher consciousness of individual and original thinking.

Drugging students to comply with a left-brain curriculum is unscrupulous. They have talents the educational system is disregarding and their futures are damaged.  We learn from all students and allow them to have their own personality and individuality not forcing compliance preventing their contributions.

"Education is not the learning of facts; it’s rather the training of the mind to think." Einstein Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn". That is the kind of teaching I was taught for student classroom learning in the university in the sixties. 

This week a friend told me that her daughter- in- law took a new teaching position where they would allow her to have hands on learning rather than just book learning. This offers hope for more real education.

We need diversity and not similarity to make our country strong. We have to have people who think out of the box and are not punished for thinking beyond the current trends of uniformity. Test scores are only a number given to the results of the performance by a student on a given day on a skill learned. It has nothing to do with innate intelligence or ingenuity. 

To pigeonhole a student with a number and compare them to another person takes away the individuality of the student’s unique abilities and talents. It reduces them to a digit and takes away their personality and personal freedom to be themselves. When did leaders come from the well-trained ranks? Only if they have the ability to be creative, intuitive, and offer ideas beyond the confined thinking of the times is there real education.

When the students were encouraged to think with their imaginations, they were not only winners, but gained self-esteem.

I am an instinctive a teacher finding that learning in a happy situation works much better. A good teacher will drop out of the field because they are sensitive people. What is left is a robot teacher teaching robot students. A basic and diverse background was not meant to create humiliating hoops to jump through while training in the profession, as I just heard from a person supervising student teachers.

 1. Get the government out of dictating what a student needs. As a teaching when I began teaching in 1961, I identified the students' needs and the teachers in that grade divided the students and met the needs by grouping the classes for certain subjects. It was not the state or Federal government telling what to teach. We did not teach as Bill Gates says, by forcing them to jump hoops that are preset and are not realistic for everyone. The students were encouraged to use their intuition, imagination and develop the individual abilities they had. Another words just a left-brain curriculum creates robots and children with poor self-esteem. People are individuals and no one is the same. 

 2.  The curriculum was not mandated from tests where many children cannot handle this form of evaluation. When labeled a failure for being a square peg in a round hole, the emotional damage may not ever be repaired. 

 3. Our culture teaches failure, depression, and dropout for not meeting some one's idea of who they "should be" instead of letting them grow in into being themselves.

 4.  Creativity is discouraged because book learning and test readiness takes priority. This is a grave mistake if you want to build success within a child. Success breeds success I was taught when in teacher's training.

 5. The cost of becoming a teacher does not match the pay other occupations with the same amount of college education preparation. For the salary earned compared to expense spent, it is wiser to go into another field.

 6. From my experience, I was born a teacher. A basic and diverse background with an emphasis on a major focus does not meant to create humiliating hoops to jump through as I just heard about from a person supervising student teachers. Learning when in a happy situation works much better. A good teacher will drop out of the field because they are sensitive people. What is left is a robot teacher teaching robot students. Is this what we want for education?

“No Child Left Behind” would not be Supported by Early Educational Pioneers or Einstein

The No Child Left Behind is a hoax to reframe teaching inside a box. Tests provide no more than a number for accomplishing a skill at that particular time and has no connection to Intelligence.  Intelligence comes from within through intuition, hunch, creativity, expression of your self, and thinking outside the box.  This was a ploy to dumb down education with teaching to what would only be what the test writers wanted students to think.  As a retired teacher, we taught to the needs of the student. Gradually the district told us what to teach, then the state and now the government.

Albert Einstein, considered one of the greatest minds to have ever lived, was said to have struggled in his early school years. This was because Einstein was more of a right-brained thinker than a left-brained thinker.  He also said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge”. In addition, he commented that, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school."  "You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself”, said Galileo.

“No Child Left Behind” is actually loosing the diversity that promotes growth and wisdom. Self-esteem in maturing by experience is success, not passing a test. Knowing yourself and being able to express it, indicates an educated person. Education needs to stop teaching for tests and teach life as an experience to be lived with imagination and originality. "To Thine Own Self Be True", is the best education we can teach. 

Moral Concern 1: The act sets impossibly high standards.
Moral Concern 2: Ignores the fact that every child is unique.
Moral Concern 3: Identifies schools as "failing schools" and this marks children.
Moral Concern 4: Ignores children with disabilities.
Moral Concern 5: Requires English language learners to take tests in English before learning the language.
Moral Concern 6: Blames schools and teachers for challenges beyond their control.
Moral Concern 7: Obscures the role of the humanities, arts and child development.
Moral Concern 8: Operates through sanctions, penalizing the most impoverished schools.
Moral Concern 9: Exacerbates racial and economic segregation.

The future of our country needs students who can develop creative thinking and individual abilities to become the leaders we need for the future and not the sheep that follow the current path that actually reduces and narrows the scope of their education from a lack of uniqueness of thought.

A Glimpse of Education’s Future

Are we really moving into 21^st century thinking with new roads and innovative information in education?  Thinking outside of the prescribed small package will bring new understanding and realizations that can provide the answers for a successful educational viewpoint. Understanding human dynamics can be the guidance to educational excellence for today. It is time to realize that a new philosophy that includes exploring outside of the box is necessary.

Currently the textbooks and teaching materials come from a left-brain set of rules. This encourages schools and society to produce automatons that do not ask questions but rather think and perform as taught. This extends to TV programming, advertising, emphasis on sports and elimination of the arts, violent games, and raucous “music” from handheld instruments, and gaming arcades. This structure contributes to less intelligence in many young people often called ‘dumbing down’.

Can we free them from the shackles of the past? There is a bigger picture where unlimited possibilities from self-expression and creativity to educate the whole student are paramount. Learning is about experience, balance, and expanding abilities and talents. “Success breeds success,” I was taught while attending college to become a teacher in the 50’s. . Out students need to feel the success of their abilities and efforts.

Looking to wisdom from the past can be the foundation of a new paradigm for success in education. This offers a special approach to teaching. This presents opportunity for children to find their own talents and express their imagination; it allows growth in their personality and individuality. Our children could become competent and confident members contributing to society.

“You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself.” Galileo.  Fortunately, many teachers are “seeing the light” and inspiring students to develop their minds and talents and skills. Children are coming to school with increased intellectual capacity, spiritual clarity, and aspirations. In many cases, these youngsters were considered abnormal, treated harshly, and drugged into submission. Sadly, these exceptional children were forced to conform to the “norm”.

More parents are recognizing their young children as gifted and wisely treating them as such. This is seen with more private schools than just parochial ones and home schooling blossoming with an awareness of the beneficial influence of fine music encouraged with the numbers of youth choirs and orchestras growing.  

 

New educational systems and resource materials will reflect factual universal and planetary history, and accurate information. As unjust laws and policies are changed education worldwide will accurately reflect universal truths. The writing, printing, and distribution of textbooks will be done expeditiously in conjunction with computerized lessons. Those teachers prepared to teach from this new basis will step up to this mission. 

It will be a dynamic system where the children can change the classroom as the term unfolds. This would be classroom-by-classroom. The teacher will only have one goal . . . that the children learn certain concepts by the end of the term, and prove they know everything expected. Each classroom will be able to govern how long this takes, and how long is spent on each concept or step, based on what the collective student group decides. This will eventually feature an evolved classroom where the students, based on their performance, will actually determine the term. Those classes who finish their terms early will get longer vacations. This potential future of education will be one that the next generation will begin to put in place.

Music, writing, painting, sculpture — all types of arts and crafts — will be given much more emphasis because all forms of artistic expression come from the soul. Current concentration on sports and the intensely competitive approach to team sports, and certainly the disproportionate time and monies allotted, will change to a spirit of enjoying the games and camaraderie while assisting each other to develop proficiency.

In addition, collectively the classrooms will be able to collectively dismiss other students in the class who detract from their learning, and/or individually help those who need review. So instead of the system deciding who’s fit for a class, the students will. It will be a far more empowering system, and will always be under the direction of the teacher. Nevertheless, it’s a far different system from what you have today, where the system drives the student. In the future, the student will drive the system. There will not be chaos, as many educators may predict. A funny thing happens when you give leadership concepts to those who can lead: They do.
